We all cherish our right to petition our government and make our voices heard. The citizen initiative process belongs to everyday people, not to wealthy out-of-state special interest groups looking to push their own agendas. But we have to look closely at what #Amendment6 actually does, and why it traps our state in a corner.
Under this amendment, if lawmakers ever need to fix a voter-passed law… even for something as simple as a typo, a minor drafting error, or an unexpected problem nobody saw coming… they couldn’t just fix it. Instead, it would take an impossible 80% vote in both the House and Senate just to send that tiny change back to another statewide election.
The Math: How 7 Senators Override the Majority of #Missouri
This extreme 80% rule hands total veto power to tiny minority blocks in the legislature, leaving the vast majority of Missouri’s counties and districts completely powerless to address local needs:
In the MissouriSenate
It takes 28 out of 34 votes to reach 80%. That means just 7 state senators can block any fix or correction. If reps from 90 out of Missouri’s 114 counties demand a change to fix a problem, a single group of 7 senators from just a few urban districts can completely shut down the fix.
In the MissouriHouse:
It takes 131 out of 163 votes to reach 80%. That means just 33 state representatives can stop a bill, leaving up to 130 other districts silenced.
Handcuffing Our Communities
When high-dollar out-of-state campaigns spend millions in big metro areas to pass sweeping measures, rural communities and smaller counties across Missouri often feel the economic or administrative side effects first. If those local communities ask their elected representatives for a legislative fix, Amendment 6 ensures that a tiny fraction of senators can lock in those mistakes forever.
This extreme rule doesn’t just apply to future laws; it reaches backward to cover every single petition measure passed since 2010. To make matters worse, the amendment leaves the door wide open for judges to rewrite ballot summaries, taking that power out of the hands of accountable officials.
While we want to protect the voice of the people, laws need to be fixable. When you tie the hands of our elected leaders and empower outside groups to lock rigid rules into our constitution, everyday citizens lose out.
Protect common sense in our state. Vote NO on Amendment 6 in the November General Election
